UNI Sri Lanka Women's Committee spearheaded a remarkable fundraising campaign during the 6th UNI Global Union World Congress, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Centre in Philadelphia, USA.
Over 1200 Women from all over the world participated at the conference, amongst all the Sri Lankan team was the only focused to initiate a fund raising by selling local handicrafts to those participants from other countries.
The campaign began with a strategic meeting of the UNI Sri Lanka Women's Committee to brainstorm ideas for the fundraiser. After careful deliberation, the committee decided to showcase and sell Sri Lankan ornaments handmade by women artisans during the congress in Philadelphia.
Committee members actively contributed to the campaign by sharing pictures of ornaments, sparking excitement. These ornaments were not just ordinary trinkets; they represented the craftsmanship and dedication of women artisans, many of whom faced various challenges, including disability and came from marginalized groups in Sri Lanka.
To source these unique ornaments, the committee reached out to small-scale ornament makers, particularly women. By purchasing ornaments directly from these artisans, the committee not only supported their livelihoods but also amplified their professional skills and talents in a global platform.
During the congress, delegates from Sri Lanka representing CBEU, UPTO and Media -Protech and FBOSL passionately shared the stories behind each ornament, emphasizing the significance of supporting women artisans and fostering unity within the global union movement. Their efforts resonated with attendees, who eagerly purchased ornaments as symbols of solidarity and support. The total sales raised US$ 891 LKR 284,229/-
The campaign served as a poignant reminder of the power of collective action and solidarity in advancing the rights and empowerment of women worldwide. It showcased how simple gestures, such as purchasing handmade ornaments, can create meaningful impact and uplift marginalized communities.
In a world where gender inequality and economic disparities persist, initiatives like these, serve as beacons of hope, inspiring individuals and organizations to join hands in creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
UNI Sri Lanka Women’s committee raised the funds to commemorate the International Women’s Day on 8th March 2024 independently without burdening the trade unions and to bring more women into trade union movement and make their presence felt and voice heard.
